Rare Jurassic fossils, crystals and gemstones

Here at Lune River you’ll find an interesting display of minerals, gemstones and fossils. Located between two Public Fossicking Areas, Lunaris Gemstones provides fossicking information for gemstone hunters, crystals and fossils for sale – Tasmanian and overseas – as well as display cabinets, featuring the rare treefern, petrified woods and agates from the local gemfields. The Lune River show-room is open most days (9 am.-6 pm.). Lunaris also take their fossils and crystals to Hobart’s Salamanca Market on Saturdays.

Bronze Whale Sculpture

Cockle Creek is the home to the bronze sculpture replica of a Southern Right Whale. The area was once a busy whaling port. Thankfully today they are a protected species and despite once being hunted they can still be seen from time to time in the bay.

Cockle Creek & the South West Wilderness

Cockle Creek is the end of the road, and a popular destination with visitors and locals alike. From here you can explore further on foot via the South Coast Track to South Cape Bay (WHA) or along the beach to Fishers Point. Spectacular views of ocean, mountains and World Heritage Area coastline are on offer. There are basic camping facilities available in the area.

Oysters are plentiful at Dover and in the Far South region.

Walk back to Nature!

The Far South has many accessible walks in the region taking in beach, mountain and rainforest.  This one is taken from Adamson Falls walk (3-4hrs) and includes some beautiful stands of Myrtle Forest in Southwest National Park World Heritage Area.
